I changed my last name and the process was quite simple and fairly inexpensive. I had my stepdad's last name and wasn't close with him my whole life and like you said, the name feels like such a tie to someone for no reason. When I was in my mid 20's, I changed it to my mom's maiden name which was also my last name at birth (until she married my stepdad). I can't tell you how thrilling it was to suddenly feel like I belonged in my family again. It was everything. It felt like a small birth on the day it became official. If you want to do it, go for it. Life is too short to feel like our name isn't ours.
I changed my last name after a 28 yr marriage/divorce. Watched movies and shows and kept putting the ones I liked with my 1st name..watched Dune.and Boom...there it was! Atreides!! From House Atreides! I LOVED the way my name sounded....DeLisa Atreides! Went to my attorney that handled by divorce and filed all the paperwork to change my name legally..and never looked back! This will forever be my name..I picked and paid for it! There is only 1 DeLisa Atreides! Soo I soo understand! It's soo amazing!
I never thought much about my last name until my sister got married and changed hers! Suddenly I was faced with these sad feelings that my only sibling and I wouldn’t be connected through sharing the same last name anymore.
I think it’s ok to do what ever you want. I use my maiden name and my married name. And when I got divorced I still kept it because of my son. My dad long ago changed his first name. What ever gives you peace!❤️
I, like your mom, wanted to share a last name with my children and took my husband’s last name when we married. But as I get older I kind of wish I hadn’t. My husband had an absent father so the name has no connection to me. I don’t feel super attached to my maiden name necessarily either but I do feel it connected me more with my roots. I love how you’re thinking about it and hope you find a happy place with your legal name. ♥️
